Spotlight on our Service: Renfrewshire Council

Renfrewshire Council is situated in Central Scotland. Our office is based in Paisley town centre. The population of the area is 192,200.

Our mediation service has been running since 2002. The service comes under the Community Safety Team. We also have Anti-Social Investigators within the service although mediation is independent of this.

When the service was in its early years there were six members of staff, but over time this has been reduced to two. Some time ago two members of our team staff were seconded to the Homeless Service to carry out Mediation with Young People.

Although there are only two of us now, we continue to provide Mediation to the whole of the Renfrewshire area so as you can imagine we are kept very busy. We have seen a rise in referrals of late. We can accept referrals irrespective of tenancy so they can come from Housing Officers, private landlords, the Police, housing associations, the Community Safety HUB and self referrals.

As community mediators we deal with a wide range of issues such as noise, clash of lifestyles, children behaviour, parking. We do not deal with boundary issues.

It can be challenging to reach all parts of the community, and currently we don’t have updated promotional material.

In respect of the types of the Mediation we offer, we do try to encourage our customers to sit down in a neutral venue to chat with each other as we find it is more successful than Shuttle Mediation although we do take certain aspects into consideration while assessing each individual case.

Our service is free to anyone who resides in the Renfrewshire area.
